fanvid friday | you were always gold to me {boy meets world}

I recently discovered this fanvid, and it instantly became one of my favorites. ¬†It highlights Cory and Shawn’s friendship and how deep it is. ¬†It also goes into how they’re always there for each other. ¬†One of my favorite parts is when you see the parallels in what they say to one another.

“I don’t even know who I am!” | “Well, Shawn, I know who you are! ¬†You’re Shawn Hunter! ¬†You’re my friend. ¬†What else do you need¬†to know?”

“I mean, what am I?” | “You’re Cory. ¬†You’re my best friend. ¬†What else do you need¬†to know?”

*cries tears* ¬†(Seriously, I cry¬†every time I watch this video. ¬†It’s painful.)

feels rant: the ox-bow incident

{Yep, it’s been a while since there’ve been any posts on here besides ‘fanvid friday’ ones – which totally count, btw – so I’m here with some very ranty feels, although since it’s not about a really well known movie, I doubt anyone will reeeeally get it. ¬†HOWEVER. ¬†If you’ve watched TO-BI and been just as emotionally traumatized by it as I was, PLEASE comment and let me know and we can have a good, feelsy session about the whole thing. ¬†‘Kay?}

164. The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) Sheriff: God better have mercy on you. You won't get any from me.

I think¬†this whole thing is going to be more like a bunch of mini-rants, completely disjointed, and they probably won’t make a lot of sense. ¬†I just need to vent right now and get it all off my mind, because when you watch something a month ago and you still think about it EVERY SINGLE, STUPID DAY, it’s time to splash it all over a blog or a journal or an email. ¬†And that’s what Ashley and Jane and I all wanted feelsy feels to be for in the first place, so it works. ūüôā

~

Okay, first of all, pretty much every tragic death in movies/books/TV shows happens when The Person is married. ¬†Kids (or a kid) are a special, heartbreaking bonus. ¬†Oh, and you get triple bonus points with whipped cream and a cherry on top if said kids are really young. ¬†Because then the mom has to take care of them all by herself and they’ll never know their father, etc., etc. ¬†So, yeah, having the kids be babies is really something special. ¬†AND THAT IS EXACTLY THE SITUATION WITH THE MARTIN FAMILY. ¬†Half of me wants to cry and the other half wants to reach through the screen and kill Tetley. ¬†UGH.

~

The members of the ‘posse’ were all complete and total idiots. (I mean, besides Davies, Gil, Sparks, Art…). ¬†First of all, if Martin or one of the others had rustled cattle and killed Kinkaid, they wouldn’t be sleeping. ¬†They’d be riding as hard and as fast as they could to get out of the county (or out of the state) before a posse caught up to them. ¬†And if they DID stop, there would be at least one person left on watch. (And don’t try to tell me that they did leave someone on guard, but he fell asleep – all of three of them were snugly wrapped up and not in any position to keep a look-out.) ¬†Mapes and Tetley and Farnley and Grier were all IDIOTS.

~

Gerald Tetley didn’t whip Martin’s horse out from under him. ¬†DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS??? ¬†I just…I don’t even want to think about it, let alone talk about it, but let me just say that there’s a reason Farnley shot him. (Twice. ¬†Which was SO, SO uncalled for.) ¬†I’M TEARING UP JUST THINKING ABOUT THE WHOLE THING. ¬†If only Dana Andrews wasn’t such an amazing actor. ¬†Then I wouldn’t care about Martin so much, which means that I wouldn’t have so many feels about the movie, which means I’D BE INFINITELY HAPPIER RIGHT ABOUT NOW. ¬†If you’ve never watched TO-BI, DON’T DO IT. ¬†It’ll shatter your heart, especially if you’re a fangirl, because we tend to get super emotionally involved in Things, right?

~

Why on earth did Dana Andrews not get nominated for Best Supporting Actor here??? (He should’ve WON too.)

~

Excuse me while I go wallow in emotions. (Not kidding. ¬†I’ll¬†totally go do that.) ¬†Now, if anybody’s worried, I’m not going into major depression over this film, but whenever I think about it, it does give me a pause. ¬†A rather sad pause, too. ¬†I mean, just screenshots from the thing make my throat clench up and I start to feel a bit teary. (And don’t even get me started on The Letter. ¬†Nope. ¬†Not even going to go there.)

fanvid friday | colors and promises {anne of green gables}

I’m currently mildly obsessed with¬†Anne of Green Gables, partially due to¬†Green Gables Fables, which a friend of mine introduced me to. ¬†(So. Good!) ¬†I’ve loved AoGG for¬†so long.¬†¬†I¬†can relate to Anne on so many levels, and I’ve wanted my own Gilbert Blythe for forever, because he’s awesome and one of the best literary characters out there. ¬†Also,¬†Shirbert is basically my OTP. ¬†So I have many feels when I watch this video (yes, even to the point of happy tears). ¬†Watch it. ¬†You’ll love it.

fanvid friday | knighthouse {emma approved}

Okay, so KnightHouse (Alex Knightley + Emma Woodhouse) is one of my OTPs.  I love them so much, and I ship them SO. HARD.

Therefore, I’ve seen a lot of fanvids for them.

And these are a few of my favorites.

You’re welcome.

This one’s great…

ALL THE KNIGHTHOUSE!!!

But this one’s my FAVORITE. ¬†Watch it three times if you need to. ¬†I won’t judge.

fanvid friday | combat! ‘letters from home’

I love all of OneTrueDoc’s Combat! music videos, and this one is no exception. ¬†Unlike her character fan vids, this one focuses on the whole squad, which is lovely, and the whole thing is SO BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT. *hugs fan video* ¬†And it makes me tear up, although I’m not exactly sure why, because it’s not really sad…do you ever gets Feels from perfect awesomeness? ¬†I don’t really know how to explain it, but I get that kind all. the. time. (Combat! simply seems to breed them.) ¬†Anyway, enjoy the fan video! (It’s spoiler free, Ashley. :))

fanvid friday | don’t you worry, child {boy meets world}

I’m currently nearing the end of¬†Boy Meets World (AHHHHHHHHHH WHAT WILL I DO WHEN IT’S OVERRRRR?!), and feels are running rampant. ¬†Joshua was born and nearly died (ack), Jack and Rachel are getting together (mixed feelings), Cory and Topanga are getting married (SQUEEEEE), and Eric and Tommy… (ACK). ¬†And don’t even get me STARTED on the Shawn Drama. ¬†First his breakup with Angela, then his dad DIED, then… ugh, I can’t. ¬†On a scale of one to even, I can’t with this kid.

So, in light of all of the Shawn Drama going on (and you can be sure that I’ll be constructing a post dedicated to Shawn in the near future), here is my absolute hands-down favorite Shawn-centric fanvid in the history of ever. ¬†I’ve probably posted this video here before, but… here it is again because it’s so good. ¬†(Tissues recommended.)

fanvid friday | saints & soldiers

*takes Ashley by the shoulders*

*looks deep into her eyes*

“Don’t. EVER. Watch. This. Movie.”

(kind of.)

_______________________

Who knew that there was a whole sub-fandom for Saints & Soldiers (I say sub-fandom, because as far as I know, there isn’t a ‘real’¬†fandom for the film) that was dedicated to making absolutely heartbreaking fan-videos? ¬†Certainly not me. ¬†Until yesterday, I was blissfully ignorant of the fact, and then I was browsing¬†Youtube when I stumbled across one of them…and then another and another and another, until I was so overloaded on feels it wasn’t even funny. ¬†So, naturally, I thought I’d share a couple for today fan-vid post, because FEEEEEEEEEELS. ¬†The whole movie is devastatingly heartbreaking to begin with, and then put a bunch of the feelsiest clips to songs and, well, I was a wreck. ¬†(Ashley, when you watch this movie, YOU WILL NEVER, EVER RECOVER END OF STORY.)

(Warning: The following fan-videos contain major spoilers.  For more information on the movie, check out my spoiler-free review.)

I don’t care for this song – too much…modernity? – so it limits the amount of times I watch this fan-video (note: most fan-video music is pretty much the farthest thing from my style of music, but if the video is well done, I’ll give it a shot), but that’s probably a good thing because it’s-it’s- ¬†I CAN’T EVEN DESCRIBE ALL MY FEELINGS RIGHT NOW. (Doesn’t help that I watched a TWS fan-video set to the same song, which was uber-feelsy.) ¬†Especially the lyric “I need to let you go” paired with THAT CERTAIN CHARACTER’S DEATH AND WHY CAN’T DEACON EVER HAVE ANY HAPPINESS IN HIS LIFE FOR GOODNESS’ SAKE.

Excuse me while I go drown my sorrows in a bowl of chocolate ice cream (the fangirl’s life line). ¬†Again, I’ve watched a fan-video¬†that used the same song that’s in this one (actually, that Combat! one that I shared in my post about Doc), and it HURTS SO. MUCH. ¬†Deacon just…I just…I CAN’T EVEN. ¬†ESPECIALLY SINCE HE’S MARRIED AND HIS WIFE’S EXPECTING A BABY WHICH IS AWFUL, PLUS HIS BACKSTORY AND IT’S AWFUL.¬† Ahem. ¬†Sorry about that, Chief. (Bonus points if you understood that reference.) ¬†But, anyway, “Sound The Bugle” fits Deacon’s¬†character perfectly. ¬†Soooo perfectly. (In a heartwrenching way, of course, because there’s no other way you can view Saints & Soldiers, and Deacon especially.)

ACK. ¬†The whole thing is terrible¬†and emotional and I-don’t-know-why-I-watched-this-in-the-first-place-ish.

So you’ll have to forgive me if my rantings are barely intelligible – that’s just the way I feel right now.

Until next time,

Eva

P.S. Ashley, if you really want to watch some clips, there are a couple of non-spoiler ones on Youtube. ¬†I don’t know how much sense they’ll make, out of context, but you’ll get a feel for the tone and mood and characters and Feelz. ¬†First clip is here, second clip is here. (And after you’ve watched the film, they’ll both be a million times more feelsy.)

fanvid friday | maya/lucas vs. maya/josh {girl meets world}

So I’ve been watching a lot of Girl Meets World lately. ¬†It’s *quite* obvious that the writers put Lucas into the story¬†to be the romantic lead and, probably, end up with Riley.

But anything can happen.

To this day, I still can’t decide whether I ship Joshaya or Lucaya (as some fans have labeled the ships). ¬†I can see Lucas and Maya getting together in the end because of the friendship and romantic tension between them that has surfaced already, but I also think Josh and Maya would be SUPER cute together. ¬†But who knows – maybe Maya just currently has an infatuation with Josh (she is, however, “in for the long haul.”).

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

(I also watch the following video fairly often – it’s on my “loop” playlist – and I think it accurately describes the tension between the two. ¬†Which, as a writer, I love.)

fanvid friday | if you can’t feel, what’s the point? {the giver}

(Heyyyoooo! ¬†Eowyn here, back from the evil clutches of college and life in general. ¬†As some of you might know, Eva, Jane, and I tried to do a posting schedule when we first started feelsy feels, and it worked… for a while. ¬†My day always ended up being about fanvids, though (I have no idea whyyyyyyy…. ūüėČ ). ¬†I’m trying to¬†step up the actual posts, but I think while that gets underway we’ll start a new series called Fanvid Friday where – you guessed it – Eva, Jane, and I will post new fanvids we love every Friday. ¬†Savvy? ¬†Let’s do this thing.)

This has got to be one of my favorite fanvids for The Giver.  I love the parallels between what Jonas told Fiona and what Fiona told Mother, and I also teared up when I realized what the song was.

Enjoy!

the awesomeness that is AVERY

{This post will not make any sense whatsoever to anyone who’s not watched Combat! and, specifically, the episode “A Gift Of Hope”. ¬†However, Ashley and Jane are still both away/busy so this is MY blog [muahahahahaha…] for right now, and this is what I wanted to post, so I’m doing it.}

{Also, this will be more of a mini-theawesomenessthatis post because Avery is only in one episode.  Still, he makes a powerful impression.}

“If you lose yourself, your courage soon will follow. ¬†So be strong tonight…remember who you are.” ~lyrics from “Sound The Bugle”

Avery is a paradox for me.

Normally, I dislike (or, at the very least, feel an annoyance for) authority figures in war movies who do a lot of shouting at the men under them, ordering them around, and generally behaving like jerks. ¬†(I also tend not to really like characters on Combat! who crack up under pressure, but I’ll get to that a little later.) ¬†And, yet, I fell in love with Avery (in the ‘this is just a fictional character’ sense, of course). ¬†I will admit that it took a couple viewings of “A Gift Of Hope” for my liking for him to fully come together, but now I like him just as much as all the show’s regulars. ¬†I believe the reason I still really liked Avery was because he’s not just an overbearing platoon sergeant. ¬†Or just a guy who breaks under the strain of war – and a gift of hope.

Really, it’s surprising just how much characterization Avery gets in an episode that’s less than an hour long. ¬†We see him go from rough-and-tough platoon sergeant (who, I’ve got to say, does looks out for the New Guys very, very well) to a suspected deserter to a man cracking under pressure to someone who Saunders hardly recognizes (as Avery prepares to really desert) and then back to how we see¬†him in Kirby’s flashback. ¬†Avery’s character is shown to us bit by bit, layer by layer, until by the end of the episode, you really feel like you know him. ¬†And…you do. ¬†Avery is a deep, true, real character and I love that.

Avery is my favorite. Also, Rip Torn is now one my most favorite actors of all time.

There’s something about Avery that’s just so cool. ¬†I know it’s horrid slang to be using for the kind of person he is, but it’s true. ¬†Mainly in Kirby’s flashback. ¬†Everything from his helmet – it’s great, it’s so unique – to the way the words keep flying out of his mouth (alternately scolding and encouraging the new replacements), to the whole name/place thing…he’s so cool. ¬†He really cares about the men under him, as shown perfectly by one of trademarks, that¬†I unimaginatively call ‘the name/place thing’. ¬†Consider…

Avery: “Batally (sp?), where’re you from?”
Batally: “Madison. ¬†Wisconsin.”
Avery: ¬†“Oh, yeah? ¬†That’s a great town, I used to work there once.”
Batally: ¬†“Yeah…”
Avery: “Had a wild little bar downtown, what’s the name of it? ¬†Used to hang out there.”
Batally: “Uh…Angelo’s? ¬†Third Street?”
Avery: “Yeah, that’s the one.”
Batally: *laughs a little*

Saunders: “Madison, Wisconsin. ¬†You worked there, huh?”
Avery: “Well, sometimes maybe it helps to think that somebody knows your name, where you’re from.”

Plus, Avery’s the only person I know who can be on the receiving end of a Saunders’ Look and respond with a, “Well don’t look at me like that, Saunders.” ¬†And that’s way. too. awesome. in and of itself. (Admittedly, the Look wasn’t one of Saunders Glares, but still…)

Speaking of Avery and Saunders, one thing that strikes me about him the most is how close he and Saunders are. ¬†Saunders isn’t one to give his friendship like that to just anyone, and Avery really has his trust. ¬†He’s been through North Africa and Italy and Sicily just like Saunders, which leads me to believe that perhaps Avery and Saunders knew each other before D-Day. That personal headcanon of mine makes what Saunders says about about “I never thought I’d want to see you dead” all the more heartwrenching. (On a slightly unrelated note, I love how the beginning of the episode dumps us right into the action without any real point of reference – we have no clue who this Avery guy is. ¬†It feels very immediate and natural.) ¬†

And I also like what White Queen has to say about the two of them in her review of the episode

Avery in the first flashback makes me grin — he’s being such a stereotypical sergeant, all loud and bossy. Saunders gives him a series of, “Do you have to do this?” looks. They’re like flip sides of the same coin, those two. Saunders is normally all into helping people over rough spots, but he can get loud and bossy when he needs to, and Avery’s the exact opposite. I dig it.

So after convincing Saunders that he didn’t run, he didn’t desert, Avery strikes out on a quest (dun-dun-DUN) with Saunders to clear his name. ¬†They go back up to the front (much to Hanley’s mystification) and it’s while disabling a mine and walking through places that have shells falling pretty close in, that Saunders begins to see that, while Avery might not have deserted, he’s lost his nerve. ¬†The climax of the episode comes when, after killing off a machine gun next of Germans singlehandedly, Saunders looks over to see Avery crying, completely shattered.

M'kay. Let me talk about this scene for a sec. Or, more specifically, the MUSIC in this scene. Most of them time whenever an ENG or basically anyone besides a regular cracks up/loses their nerve, there's really scary/jittery music in the background. But when in THIS scene, what is playing? The C! theme, soft and quiet. Makes me cry EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Oh, man. ¬†That part always, always gets to me in hugely emotional way. ¬†See, I’m the kind of person who notices the minutiae of music in films and TV shows. ¬†I’ll listen for repeated musical themes (or even just notes) and tie in the fact that “OH MY GOODNESS THEY RE-USED THE SAME THEME FROM THAT SCENE FOR THIS SCENE IT MUST MEAN SOMETHING”. ¬†I sometimes go a little overboard, but I can’t help it. ¬†It’s just something I notice. ¬†And, usually, whenever a character breaks up/loses their nerve on Combat!, the music is all moody/jittery/scary – total mood music. ¬†But you know what they decided to play during that little bit of Avery just before the dramatic commercial break. ¬†The theme tune, played slow and low.

THE THEME TUNE, PLAYED SLOW AND LOW.

Immediately, it gives Avery a distinction (in my mind) from all the other random guys who lose their nerve. ¬†The whole thing is more respectful, in a way, and that’s what I love about it. ¬†Plus, when the theme’s played like that, it’s sort of achingly beautiful. ¬†So I cry a lot.

And the way Avery comes back around? ¬†Perfect. ¬†Absolutely perfect. ¬†He’s leaving for good, going off to desert, even after Saunders told/asked him not to. ¬†So he’s walking away, all firm and determined, when a group of young (verrry young) GIs call out to him and ask him, in so many words, if he can direct them to King Company. (Let me just say that the way Avery says – of King Company – “Yeah, that’s a good outfit” always makes me smile.) ¬†No, he can’t, he’s being sent back to the States, etc, etc. ¬†And then…and then… (I WILL NOT CRY. ¬†I WILL NOT CRY. ¬†I WILL NOT CRY.)

GI #1: “Hey, Sarge, did you ever see any of those new Kraut tanks?”
GI #2: “You know, the ones with the flamethrowers? ¬†We heard they burned out a whole company from the 23rd.”
Avery: “Who told you that?”
GI #3: “Well, everybody knows it.”
Avery: “Well I don’t know it. ¬†And if they haven’t thrown it at me, they ain’t got it.”¬†[brief note: right after he says the above, you can see him thinking, kind of like “Should I walk away¬†or keep talking?” and it’s amazing acting on Rip Torn’s part] ¬†“You stop listenin’ to all that garbage, you hear me? ¬†Learn to count on yourself. ¬†There ain’t gonna be anyone up there to boost you over the rough spots, you gotta realize that…what’s your name?”
GI #2 (I think): “Pittinger.”
Avery: “Where’re you from?”
GI #2: “Tacomba. ¬†Tacomba, Washington.”
Avery: “Yeah, I used to work up there. ¬†Spent a lot of time in a real wild little bar downtown on the main drag.”
GI #2: “Tony’s!”
Avery: “Yeah, that’s the place. ¬†I used to have some real wild times there…”

*melts into a puddle of feels*

Anyway.

They could’ve ended the episode there, and it would have been practically perfect, but they added in the greatest little tag scene with Saunders and Avery that’s one of my favorite scenes in the whole show. ¬†From Avery’s little hand wave when Saunders wakes up to the “For a while back there, I almost thought that…”/”Yeah, for a moment back there, I almost did.” to Saunders’ smile, it’s an all around wonderful scene. ¬†Just wonderful.

Also, Rip Torn is a great actor and he was wonderful in ‘Pork Chop Hill’ too and I love his Texas accent.
